Friends of Jack and Ruby: Paperback Films

So it’s time to break our previous pattern and feature some men for this segment of Friends of Jack and Ruby!

Paperback Films was born in early 2011 when Chris and Mark merged their two separate businesses after working the 2010 wedding season as a team.  They use the art of film to tell the story of your wedding, catching all the moments, the glances and laughter that you might not even notice happening on your wedding day.  Their films have the ability to make people laugh, cry and press play over and over again.

If you’ve ever been in the room when Paperback Films plays a Same Day Edit at a wedding reception it’s quite the event, and it usually ends with cheers from the audience and a few tears from the bride and other ladies in the crowd.  If you’ve ever had the privilege of watching these men work while they’re getting ready for a Same Day Edit it’s very clear that they LOVE what they do and they get a thrill out of challenging themselves to make the best highlight video possible for the couple in the course of about 8-10 hours.

We have had the privilege of working with Paperback Films on numerous occasions. As photographers, working with videographers can sometimes be *gasp* difficult. This is never the case with Paperback Films, Chris and Mark are a photographers dream. They are quick to get the footage they need, while being respectful of the photographers needs as well. They shoot the action as it happens rather than taking extra time to pose a couple or create a scene, which means that we as photographers can go on with our schedule with no interruptions. During a session with Paperback Films we can almost forget that they’re there, and sometimes do, because they are so great at doing what they do without being up close and personal. We always enjoy working with Chris and Mark because not only are they easy to work with but they also add some extra fun to the day with their light and easy approach to shooting. Their final product always demonstrates that same feel: relaxed, fun, natural, and real.

If you see the Paperback crew out filming this summer you might notice a third team member with them, that’s Cody, their secret weapon.  That cute little shot of the dog running by in Lauren and Adam’s highlight video…yup, that was Cody!

We asked Mark and Chris our “Jack and Ruby Questions” so you can get to know them a little bit better!

What’s your favourite thing in your closet?

Mark: Definitely go with the white belt.. inspired by Cody.  Now white belts have not always been on the radar for a fashion element I would want to wear personally.. however as a fashion statement on a wedding day I find it still has a memorable touch that we at Paperback have embraced.  And when my wife Melissa continued to encourage me that getting a white belt like Cody would be a good idea you know it’s just a matter of time before I give in.

Chris: I love winter because I love sweaters. Right now my favorite thing in my closet is my navy blue banana republic sweater along with my baby blue checkered dress shirt. I feel so comfortable in it and confident at the same time.  Once I got married, I stopped buying myself clothes because my awesome wife loves to buy things for me and dresses me up! I can’t complain!

What’s your ideal getaway?

M: So many ideal getaway’s to chose from… I would have to go with playing in the ocean… usually boogie boarding and the feeble attempts at surfing.  Love the beach and the sun.. and being there with Melissa.

C: Anything where there is a beach, hot weather and lots of sun. I am probably the worst (or best) person to vacation with because I am very low key. I truly love the idea of relaxing and taking in a holiday where there are no expectations about anything. To me getting away is truly “getting away” from everything.

What’s your favourite indulgence?

M: Have to go with glass half filled with ice and the rest rye and coke.

C: Apple pancakes with a touch of brown sugar and cinnamon. I can’t get enough!

What’s your favourite movie?

M: Shawshank Redemption – Love how the main character sets out on a journey, changing the lives of those around him and finding success in the persistence of years of hard work.

C: Awakenings – this movie gripped me when i first watched it. It is based on a true story of the victims of the encephalitis epidemic. Your heart goes out for the patients and what they must have gone through during that time. I have to note that Shawshank is probably just as close (Mark stole my #1 ;) )

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?

M: Shooting a Same Day Edit of course!!  Or golfing is good too!

C: I have to confess, playing video games with my friends, family and brother in law j. I’ve always been a gamer!  I always enjoy a round of golf but only if we aren’t keeping score ;) . Also, I’ll never say no to a good hockey game (watching or playing).

What do you love about your job?

M: Shooting weddings is part of a deep fulfillment of participating in a creative process that I enjoy so much.  Part of the joy comes from being with people that are celebrating a truly happy occasion and I do feel that marriage is a very powerful statement and a journey that is worth celebrating.  I love meeting with our couples and getting to chat it up and we really have tons of fun shooting on the day of… so really I love that my job is fun.

C: There are two things that I love about my job!

One – is that it is a ton of fun.

Two – from start to finish, the entire process of creating a wedding film – filming, meeting the couple, editing, sound design, color correction and all of the technical things that put together a memory at the end of the day is such a rewarding process. We truly have the honor of filming/documenting one of the most important days in a person’s life. Its something we don’t take lightly and we understand the amount of trust that is given to us by our clients.

Mr & Mrs: Kyle and Julie

How do your write a blog post about your best friend’s wedding? Well i’m not sure how you would do it, but I(Becky) procrastinated. I edited, edited, edited all the pretty pictures and put off the writing part until now. I can’t put it off any longer because it’s time to share Julie and Kyle’s wedding!

Julie is my BFF. I lived with her for 8 years and we’ve had an infinite number of adventures and shattered many many shopping budgets together. Julie and I swore we would live at our condo together forever. We planned to one day be the old ladies in the common room at 3pm everyday having coffee. Even though we planned to stay single forever I always knew Julie had the qualities of an amazing wife. Julie took care of me for 8 years, cleaning up after my messy self, baking special batches of cookies – some with chocolate chips just for me and shopping for me when she was away and I wasn’t with her. When Kyle came into the picture I knew Julie was serious about him when she bought him jeans, William Rast jeans at that…any boy worth William Rast jeans was probably pretty special to Julie. I was SO excited to get the call that Julie and Kyle were engaged! Kyle takes such good care of Julie and it’s nice that after taking care of everyone else for years Julie has Kyle to take the best care of her!

So four months ago the planning began and for a girl who does not like weddings Julie had a lot of people who do love weddings on her dream team….a sister-in-law who is a magician with a make up brush and a flat iron, another sister-in-law starting up a wedding decor business….all Julie really needed to do was pick a dress! The trip to find the dress was sure to be a memorable one, Tracy and I had strict instructions to keep anything “frilly and wedding-ey” away from Julie, she wanted something simple simple simple. We were in good hands with Jackie at 7th Avenue Fashions….we LOVED Jackie!! And as soon as we spotted her Michael Kors watch (the same one Julie has!) we knew it was meant to be that she was helping Julie! When Julie stepped out of the dressing room in her first dress mouths dropped all over the salon….this was it, this was THE dress! It was 100% Julie – glamorous and sophisticated. With that purchase almost everything was done in record time, she was ready to walk down the aisle.

When Julie asked me to be her ‘Best Gal’ and wedding photographer I couldn’t say no and if I would have said no I probably would have changed my mind after I saw the dress. Come to think of it, she never even gave me a chance to say no, she called me and said “dude, will you be my best gal? oh and you’re my photographer too”. The wedding day was such a labour of love by everyone involved, and I couldn’t have pulled double duty without the help of two super special ladies. Kara: THANK-YOU for pulling more than your weight! Thank-you for getting every shot while I got caught up in moments, standing and watching when I was supposed to be shooting! I am so lucky to shoot side by side with you!! Tracy: THANK-YOU for picking up my bridesmaid slack! Thank-you for packing the best wedding day snacks – we really do want to hire you to pack our lunches this summer! Thank-you for your never ending smiles and positive attitude all day long, even after being up so super early to make us all look pretty! You are the best at what you do, second to none.

Big shout-out to the lovely staff at Rembrandt’s! Julie floated down their spiral staircase during the ceremony in the gorgeous Bistro. What a lovely place for a wedding and to top it all off the food is amazing! Kara and I can’t wait to shoot there again in June!

Check out the SLIDESHOW for some more pics set to some lovely throwback music just for Julie :)

We loooove Tracy! She was up early to beautify all of us and when I walked in the door at 7:35am she had already done her own hair!

We found these shoes in Vegas one year and Julie left them there but never forgot about them. When we went back the next year they were still there, on sale AND her size! It was meant to be!!

A funny moment during the ‘first look’, we thought Kyle was coming out of the elevator but he was waiting downstairs and Julie’s brother Darrin came out instead!

Julie is affectionally known among family members as “the Queen” so we thought it was fitting to work in some royalty to the bridal photos.

What a special little purse :)

Here’s a special ring shot just for Kyle. Go Jets go! :)

BLING! Julie’s gorgeous custom made rings were from Her Dream Diamond and those shiny silver pearls from Tiffany.

Julie’s gorgeous flowers were put together by her new sister in law, Shawna.

Once Julie and Kyle had enough of the cameras pointed at them we did a little mini session with Tracy her hubby (Julie’s brother) Darrin. How cute are they??

Don’t forget the SLIDESHOW!!
