Wedded Bliss: James and Kim

Today’s post is a little different for Jack and Ruby and SUPER special.  We normally only photograph couples, but one gorgeous day in September we made a special trip out to Grand Beach to photograph a very, very, special family.  My (Kara) sister Kim and her husband James were celebrating their 10th wedding anniversary over the long weekend and I decided a surprise was definitely necessary.  With the help of my sister Kendra, the fabulous Becky, not too much complaining from my husband Dwayne, and some assistance from some other special friends, James and I managed to surprise Kim with a family photo shoot.

James and Kim are an example of a strong, healthy, Christian marriage.  Married 10 years and ready for another 50, they stand by each other always putting each other second, and God first.  They lead lives of example, and I couldn’t be more proud and more humbled by them.  Sure, they are human like the rest of us, making mistakes along the way, but they show me on a daily basis what it means to put God and family first.  2 years ago James and Kim made a huge move to Winnipeg where James now works as Director of Programming at Inner City Youth Alive.  It still saddens me to not have them living a few blocks away, but I am so excited for them and the difference they are making in Winnipeg and the north end community.

What a fun day we had playing in the sand dunes with James and Kim and the kids.  We were so blessed to have a warm day, perfect for the fun beach shoot we had planned.  Thanks so very much to Becky for coming along and helping me shoot, to Kendra for styling and helping to bring it all together, and to everyone else involved.  Thanks to Nancy Zacharias for hair and make up (more to come about her in the future!) and to Leane Funk of Helena Brecht for jewelry.

Here’s my lil’ sis and her beautiful family.  Love you all!

Up Close and Personal: Practice Makes Perfect

Back in August I headed to Saskatoon to shoot my friend Pam’s wedding.  What this meant was me shooting without my Becky, who has by now become like my left arm.  I was entering into now unchartered territory.  It may have only been a year since I shot a wedding solo but it may as well have been a lifetime.  I was scared!  I knew I could shoot the wedding on my own, I could cover all the big moments, I could do it well, because it was for someone so very special!  But what if something went wrong?  What if I got stuck on the right side at the ceremony and I needed to be on the left?  So I found Jocelyn.  I met Jocelyn 3 years ago when I assisted at her wedding with Dream Photography.  We became facebook friends and it just so happens that Jocelyn has started her own photography business.  So the arrangements were made but I still felt a little unsettled.  I had really only met Jocelyn once, and I had never shot with her before…. we needed practice.  I needed to feel like I knew where she’d be, and that she had my back.

So, that’s when these 3 beautiful people came along.  I asked my cousin Kelly if she would pose for us for some photos, and if she could convince her boyfriend Tim to join us.  And from there it only made sense that they bring Tim’s daughter Kamryn along…. and there you have it.  A photo shoot was born.  When I pulled up to our meeting place I knew this would be fun.  These three were NOT treating this as a practice shoot, they came dressed to kill and ready to make friends with the camera.  We had so much fun, and finally here are the results!  Thanks guys, and thanks Jocelyn again for helping me out!

This day also happened to be Kelly’s 30th birthday, and I was so lucky to get to spend it with her!  Kelly, you are absolutely stunning, and so beautiful inside and out.  Love you! xoxo
