We had the amazing opportunity to shoot Matt and Bertha’s winter LOVE session out at Falcon Trails Resort, in Falcon Lake, Manitoba. Friends of Jack & Ruby: Nancy Zacharias – Make Up Artist

We first worked with Nancy back in Summer for our very special family session with James and Kim. Recently we have had the pleasure of working with her a few more times, and we have only wonderful things to say! Nancy is a master at her craft, and a good make up artist is soooo very important in our line of work. We cannot say it enough ladies: Hire a Make Up Artist for your big day! Wether its your wedding, engagement session, a family session or maternity session, you deserve to look and feel your very best!!!! All too often we have women who show up to a shoot feeling insecure, and the first thing they ask is if we can “edit this out”, be it blemishes, dark circles under their eyes, uneven skin tones, etc. We highly recommend rather than fixing something later that you visit someone like Nancy who will make you feel like a million bucks BEFORE the photo shoot, so you can relax and enjoy yourself during the shoot and be confident in your beauty!!! We asked Nancy our Jack and Ruby questions so you can get to know her a bit. You can just tell by looking at her beautiful sweet face that she’s as wonderful inside as she is out.

What’s your favourite thing in your closet?

My wedding shoes! Badgley Mischka’s that are to die for! (I’ve spent many an evening wearing them with my sweatpants!!).

What’s your ideal getaway?

Any adventure that includes water. I’ve been a water baby my whole life, and I’ve never grown out of it!

What’s your favourite indulgence?

SHOES!! I was born with the addiction… Been a shoe lady since I could walk!

What’s your favourite movie?

Embarrassingly… The Notebook. May we all experience love like that in our lives!

What’s your favourite way to spend a weekend?

With my boys head first in any outside adventure!

What do you love about your job?

Giving someone new perspective of themselves. Women so struggle with self image, & if only for a moment I can change their view of themselves, that to me is the best feeling in the world. And I’m lucky enough to call this my “job”.

Wedded Bliss: Picture Perfect

We were determined to shoot a winter LOVE session this season, we’d been dreaming and planning it for what seemed like forever. We pictured furry hats and warm mittens, fuzzy sweaters and cozy winter jackets. We wanted fun in the snow, rosy red cheeks, a crackling fire and hot chocolate. First we needed the most cuddly, lovey dovey couple we could find. After putting out a call for models and unfortunately being left stranded only 6 days before our shoot, we found Matt and Bertha. It was simply meant to be. Matt and Bertha have been married going on 5 years, and they still look like they could be on their honeymoon. They are just the sweetest two people we’ve ever met. Matt and Bertha MADE this shoot, and we are so very grateful they could come to our rescue at the last minute. Next, we needed the most perfect location for this perfect vision, and we found it. Falcon Trails Resort is the most picturesque little winter hideaway, and possibly Manitoba’s best kept all season’s secret. We were just delighted when we arrived to a scene that was EXACTLY what we had imagined! We lucked out and the perfection continued with the weather. This mid-March Sunday brought with it temperatures above +10 degrees celsius. We couldn’t believe it!! It’s possible we actually got a little tanned during this March shoot. We couldn’t have been happier!

The Best of 2011 – WEDDINGS!!!

Here’s the 3rd and final post in our “Best of 2011″ series. WEDDINGS!!!! Obviously, we’re pretty passionate about weddings. It is, after all, the basis of our business. We just can’t help it, we love people in love. We also love their friends and families and the many special moments that are shared between them all on a wedding day. We are definitely the luckiest of any wedding vendor, as we are with our couples all day long. We are there when our brides open up very special gifts from their grooms first thing in the morning. We are there as our brides step into their dresses, and we oooh and aaahhh right along with the rest of the gals!!! We are there for our absolutely favorite moment as the bride and groom see each other for the first time, be it during a first look before the wedding, or at the end of the aisle. From the “I do’s” to the first dance, we are there. Like I said, we’re pretty lucky.

So, here they are, some of our absolute favorite wedding shots of 2011. We love looking back at our amazing first year as Jack and Ruby Photography and we are so thankful to all of our amazing clients for joining us in this journey. We are also so very excited to look forward to 2012 and all it has to offer. From our awesome new clients, to a new house for Becky and a new baby for Kara, we just know it’s going to be a great year!!!

The Best of 2011 – Engagement Sessions

Next in our series of “Best of 2011″ posts are our favorite shots from our engagement sessions. We LOOOOOOVE engagement sessions. It is our time to really get to know a couple before their big day. To see how they interact with the camera, but more importantly to see how they interact with each other and how they LOVE. Some couples are very private about their love, and we don’t just mean no PDA’s. They are subtle and sweet. They whisper things when they don’t think we are listening and share a quick touch, a hug, a kiss, when they don’t think we’re watching. Other couples are BIG in their love. They laugh big, they smile big, they talk big, they hug big. We love that each couple is so unique, we love getting to know them during this relaxed time before the wedding. It’s a huge window into what we can expect on their wedding day, and helps us to capture them at their very best.

The Best of 2011 – Anytime Sessions

Well 2011 has come and gone…Kara ushered in the new year with sweet little Sarah and in typical Becky fashion, she didn’t even make it to midnight before she was snugly tucked in bed. 2011 was an amazing year for Jack and Ruby Photography, it was our first full wedding season working together on each and every shoot and we loved every minute of it! Looking back on everything we shot in 2011 only one thing comes to mind “wow, are we lucky”. Lucky to work with such amazing clients who trust our photographic vision enough to hire us for their most important day!

Over the next week we will take a look back at some of our faves from our 2011 shoots, starting with our special “anytime” shoots! It was torturous trying to only pick one favourite from each shoot…but we forced ourselves to stick with one!

Up, Up and away – Krysten and Luke

What a work of heart this shoot was! Kara’s sister helped with our DIY hot air balloon, Krysten planned out the wardrobe so carefully and Kara and I slaved over getting that hot air balloon up a hill on one of the hottest days of the summer! The results? A favorite shoot from the summer of 2011.

While we are normally not family photographers Kara’s sisters’s 10 year anniversary called for something VERY special! We hit the road to Grand Beach and had a grand ole time with the Driedger family!

Mr & Mrs: David and Danielle

It’s no wonder he fell in love with her. She has a mega watt smile, an infectious laugh and she also has this way of making anyone feel comfortable spilling their dreams and troubles to her after meeting her for only a moment.

It’s no wonder she fell in love with him. Those boyish good looks and his passion and excitement for life that makes it impossible not to have a good time when you’re around him!

Danielle and David’s love story has been unfolding for many years already and we were so honored to be the ones to capture this special day for them. There were so many moments during the day that were so full of emotion – the few tears that escaped as David watched Danielle walk down the aisle with her mom and dad, the vows – which brought a few sweet tears and pauses from Danielle, the excitement as David and Danielle walked into the reception as husband and wife and the special father daughter dance that ended with a hug so powerful if you were watching you almost felt like you were being hugged!

It’s hard to believe there was more snow on the ground on the day of this November wedding than there is on the ground today! With that fresh blanket of snow covering the city we just had to take advantage! We ended off the photo session on the top of a downtown parkade with the lights of downtown sparkling behind us and the cheers of a Jets win coming from below! Huge thanks to the awesome wedding party for braving the cold with us!

As always, it was a joy to work with the crew from Paperback Films again! The excitement around the Same Day Edit they played at the reception was AMAZING! Check out their blog to see it!

It’s no secret that we love and adore weddings and that’s probably a good thing since we are wedding photographers! Mr & Mrs: Elliot and Ranae

The air was crisp and filled with the smells of fall. The girls were up early, busy with preparations for the day to come. There was a buzz of excitement in the room that was infectious, or maybe it was the smile on Ranae’s face.

The bride and groom had planned a First Look to see each other before the ceremony. The hay bales set the mood for a perfect fall day. Ranae tapped Elliot on the shoulder and the day officially began.

We spent the day with Elliot and Ranae and their friends and family. We watched as they shared special moments, laughed and cried, embraced and radiated with pride, love, and happiness. There were hiccups throughout the day, as there always are, but they didn’t keep Elliot and Ranae from saying their I do’s and returning down the aisle as man and wife. A happy ending, and an even happier beginning.
